The Kishon River is flowing from Jenin in Samaria along 70km through the Yizrael Valley, from the gap of the Kishon (the narrow passage between the Carmel and Alonim Shfar'am Hills) and Zebulon Valley, up to the river's eshtuary in the Haifa Bay. Kishon port is located at the eshtuary of the river. The area of its drainage basin is the second largest coastal stream in the country, approximately 1,110 square km, and along considerable parts its flow is steady. The Kishon is mentioned in the bible, in the song of Deborah in the Book of Judges as the stream to which the chariots of Sisera, a general in the army of Yavin, King of Hatzor who fought the Israelites headed by Barak ben Avinoam, were carried away. Kishon Park was erected alongside the river.
In the area of HaAmakim junction, "HaAmakimPark" was erected. The park includes the Turkish bridge passing over the stream, where the Yizrael Valley train used to pass, and the banks of the stream on both sides of Road 75. The park was erected on the lands purchased by Jewish National Fund in 1935. A road was paved in the park area, passing along the river and used as a walking and cycling road. The length of the road is 3-4 km and it reaches the "eucalyptus island" - a small islet located in the middle of the KishonRiver. In the area by the bridge there is a convenient access to the river and other activities such as fishing. Boats from the club sail in the Kishon port to a channel of the river reaching the bridge past the "eucalyptus island." In the course of rowing you can enjoy a wide variety of vegetation, birds and animals and meet fishermen and people traveling in the area. The Kishon River Authority was established in 1994 and it consists of 33 different entities. It was established for the purpose of treating the last part of the river, in a length of 25km before its meeting with the Mediterranean Sea. The authority acts so as to make the river a green area connecting Haifa and its satellite cities, Nesher, Kiryat Tivon and the Krayot region.
In August 2010 the Ministry of Environmental Protection approved a plan to clean the part of the river flowing by the Oil Refineries Ltd. According to the plan, a part of the river in a length of 1-1.5km will be diverted and turned into a regular winding bypass. After the diversion a part of the polluted river will be cleaned and the polluted soil will be gathered in the area between the original channel and the new channel. This soil will undergo biological treatments that will last for a few years. After being cleaned, the soil will be used to block the old channel and the rest of the soil will be used to set up a park around the banks of the river. The projected cost of the project is NIS 200-300 million. [2] In September 2010 the board of directors of Oil Refineries Ltd approved the allocation of NIS 90 million to finance their share in the program to clean the river. |
